Samsung Galaxy A3 2017 Review

Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) – Availability and price

Samsung presented its Galaxy A5 and A3 during the CES in Las Vegas for this 2017. Both models of the mid-range are quite popular. Therefore they should be two good bets for its followers and for the general public.
The Galaxy A3 2017 is available from February 3 for a price of € 329. It can be purchased in presale from the official website of Samsung or other online stores. Available colors are pink, gold, blue and black.

Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) – Design and finishing

Regarding design, the 2017 A3, such as A5 2017, are worthy heirs of the Samsung Galaxy family A. On paper A3 2017 has very similar dimensions (135.4 x 66.2 x 7.9 mm) and Only 3 grams more (135 g).
If we focus on the design, we see the classic Samsung style, central oval button and the brand logo under the loudspeaker for calls. The resemblance to the Galaxy S7 is indisputable. If we compare it with the A5 2017 is practically the same, except that it is reduced in scale. The brand has enough pressure to prove its worth after the scandal of Note7.
The speaker is no longer on the bottom side, it has migrated to the right side on the power button. Something that will thank the players as they will now not cover the speaker with the hand. At the bottom edge what we still find is a USB port (type C on this occasion) and the mini-jack for headphones. At the top we find the slot to insert a nano SIM card and another microSD.
The rear camera does not protrude from the back. Although the touch has some relief, when it rests on a surface is completely stable. In the front, we have a great novelty since the start button also has a fingerprint sensor.
The glass on the front has a 2.5 D effect, and the one on the back is fully 3D, which apparently gives an exclusive look to the device. It is not a flagship, but the quality of construction is very similar. We find the same rounded edges and the same touch as the S7.
Another interesting point is that this generation is waterproof, with an IP86 certificate, that is, the same as the Galaxy S7. Having this quality of the finish and the fingerprint sensor in a device of less than € 350 is quite a big step for Samsung.
The phone is relatively small, at least compared to the current size standard that does not usually fall below 5.2 inches. It can be a bit slippery if we do not have clean hands but I have to admit that the use of a hand is perfect.

Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) – Screen

In general, the screen has the same technical configuration as its predecessor. As usual, we found a Super AMOLED display 4.7 inches and an HD resolution (720 x 1280 pixels). The density of points reached the 331 ppp, that is to say, the same data also that in the previous model. We even repeat with the protection with a Gorilla Glass 4.
However, what is surprising is finding the Always-On-Display function, which we already know from other high-end models. Thus, the screen displays some relevant information continuously (clock, calendar, battery) and you can also choose to show the notifications.A small detail that I liked a lot is that by default the screen goes off towards the middle (as in old TVs), which gives a lovely effect.

Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) – Software

We came across Android 6.0.1 series Marshmallow with a version of its modified TouchWiz interface, and that looks quite like the S7 with Nougat. I’ve never been a big fan of the Samsung interface, particularly from previous versions with Kitkat (including the S5) because it was just awful and cumbersome loading a lot of the system. Since the S6, Samsung has clearly improved the things and so in Note7 has had the merit of providing a very friendly interface.
The modification in the A3 2017 is also for better even if you bring a version of Android a little disagree with the times. Of course, it brings enough preinstalled Microsoft applications (Excel, OneNote, PowerPoint, one drive, Skype and Word), Google, some Samsung, and Facebook, that you will never be able to uninstall.

Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) – Performance

Under the hood of the device, we find the Exynos 7870 processor with 14 nm technology (as the S6 processor). It is a mid-range processor with eight A53 cores synchronized at a frequency of 1.6 GHz. To support it, we find a Mali-T830 GPU and 2 GB of RAM. This should be enough for an average user who does not require much of a phone, which is precisely the audience of the mid-range.In practice, it is quite disappointing that the device only offers 9.8 GB of internal memory and 481 MB of free RAM, without even having installed a new application.

Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) – Camera

The sensor of the front camera goes up 8 megapixels, and for the front, we have 13 megapixels, just like its predecessor. The aperture for both chambers has not changed, maintaining the f / 1.9 value.
The application of the camera is more or less similar to that found in the Galaxy S7 (fewer filters, in particular). In our complete analysis, we will thoroughly test the camera to see what it is capable of.

Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) – Battery

Regarding specifications, we see only a small increase in battery capacity compared to the A3 2016. We move from 2300 mAh up to 2350 mAh. We have not had the opportunity to try the phone for a long time, so we do not know how your autonomy will be.
The charge is through its USB Type-C port. Unlike the Galaxy A5 2017, this Galaxy A3 2017 does not have fast charge. In the box, we find a 5V and 1.55A charger that we must try to know what it takes to refill your battery.

First verdict

Samsung wants to (re) win the hearts of users and tries to attract the masses. By offering a waterproof smartphone with a fingerprint reader and a very stylish design at a price of 330 euros, it is likely that many users will be very attracted. His intention is very clear, he wants to propose to the mid-range user everything he needs but still be exclusive.
The software interface is more mature, and performance can have potential. In our complete analysis, we will observe all these points in more detail and above all check if the autonomy is as good as the one of its predecessor.
