OnePlus 3T Review

Curious: The OnePlus 3T not only looks almost identical to its 5 months older brother OnePlus 3, it also has the same characteristics in many ways, with some improvements in detail. Is an upgrade so if you are satisfied with the predecessor smartphone? Let us approach the answer with a consideration of the differences and considerations, whether these are worth their money.

The question is whether you should opt for the OnePlus 3 or 3T – at least if you ignore the used market and third-party. Because the regular OP3 is no longer sold, the OP3T is the only remaining device in the OnePlus Onlineshop. But do you have to upgrade from the OnePlus 3 to 3T? Finally, it is a psychologically understandable effect that one wants to have the best device offered in the desired price segment. Or are you allowed to relax, because the differences are so small that they are not worth the upgrade effort? We want in our This question review of the OnePlus 3T cleared.

As an entry is allowed us, in our comprehensive test of OnePlus 3 indicate, that the presented in May 2016 base model, which was a top device for your money. In the test, we praised its successful design, the good software plus useful extensions of the Android system, the amazing fast charging of the battery via DashCharge, the performance, the large internal memory and the dual SIM capability. On an average to above-average, but not quite high-end level we graded the camera, the display, the conversation quality and the missing possibility of the memory extension. These advantages and disadvantages remain with the OnePlus 3T, so much is anticipated.

However, if you are afraid that the OnePlus 3 will be left on the left side of the softwares, you can be assured. In a personal conversation with OnePlus, Eric Zarshenas, the company’s Global Head of Communications, assured us that OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T will be treated in the same way on the same day as two different versions of the same device. At the time when this test is written, however, this is not yet the case. Although both devices run on Android 6.0.1 with the security patch level November 2016, but the OP3 has only OxygenOS 3.2.8, the OP3T already OxygenOS 3.5.4. Since OnePlus is currently working on the nougat update with high pressure and interested in taking part in two beta programs with different update frequencies, we are indulgent here – especially since both OS versions differ little in terms of features and stability.

But now to the more obvious differences.

Difference 1: More memory – if you want

The OnePlus 3 was only available in one version with 64 GB of internal memory, the OnePlus 3T has the choice between 64 GB and 128 GB. This additional memory option is welcome because there is no slot for memory cards installed on both devices. Most users, of course, can also handle 64 GB. Anyone who wants to store many images and videos on their device, do not want to save them externally and/or want to save music, serials, and movies locally, can be more confident about the version with more memory.

Difference 2: The price

You can, of course, streamline your purchase decision by being convinced to invest in the future or to protect yourself against any memory bottlenecks that may occur. And so much more you pay for 128 GB so synonymous not, the extra charge for more internal memory is with the OnePlus 3T much lower than the competition. For example, the 128GB version costs only 40 euros more than the 64GB. For comparison: Google and Apple demand for the update from 32 to 128 GB with the pixel and iPhone 7 each a supplement of 110 euros. Even if the internal memory of the competitors is increased by 96 instead of “only” 64 GB, you can hardly call that shameful. It is a good thing that OnePlus does not share this hostile course.
If one takes a look at the absolute prices, one must realize, of course, that the OnePlus 3T is not unrivaled cheap. For the price of 439 euros (64GB version) and 479 euros (128GB version) one gets also already other high-end smartphones, for example, the Honor 8, the LG G5 and (punctually) the Galaxy S7. The regular OnePlus 3 gave it for 399 euro, here was the price-performance ratio still a stronger argument.

Difference 3: Performance

In the OnePlus 3, a Snapdragon 820 with 2.15 GHz maximum clock, in the OnePlus 3T a Snapdragon 821. The latter is even, unlike, for example Google’s Pixel XL, clocked at 2.35 instead of 2.15 GHz higher. We hunted the device through some of the most important benchmarks, these are our results:
As you would expect, the OnePlus 3T is positioned slightly higher in CPU-heavy benchmarks. Depending on the test, about 5 percent more power justify a new purchase as well as the (imperceptible) increase in performance on the Home screen or in games. Especially with graphics-intensive 3D titles, the GPU is much more important, which is the same with Snapdragon 820 and 821. Interestingly, the graphics performance in the “Sling-Shot” benchmarks of 3Dmark is even lower in the OnePlus 3T – we have reproduced the result in three different runs. Probably a slightly more aggressive thermal throttling is responsible for this.

Difference 4: More battery

OnePlus has increased the battery capacity from 3,000 to 3,400 mAh by 13%. The device is the same size, teardown revealed that the batteries are even mechanically compatible so they can be interchanged – just because of a software lock, the OnePlus 3 not use the larger battery of OnePlus 3T with higher capacity. In everyday life, we can not actually feel a longer battery life – we suspect that the higher-clocked Snapdragon 821 consumes a little more energy so that the advantage is marginalized by the increased processor performance.

Difference 5: Better front camera

In the 3T, OnePlus has now installed a 16 MP front camera. Selfie fans will be happy because the quality of the pictures is actually a touch better. Not only is the image somewhat sharper, the colors are also somewhat saturated and contrast-rich, but this is more related to optimized postprocessing than the improved sensor.

Difference 5½: Better digital image stabilization

Just a small advantage and therefore only half a point of innovation is the improved digital image stabilization when recording video. The work is rather subtle, an Aha effect as with the amazingly good image stabilization of Google’s pixel phones remains out, nevertheless, we do not encounter this detail improvement, of course, from the bed edge.

Difference 6: sapphire glass on the camera

OnePlus has now equipped the back of the camera with extremely hard and scratch-resistant sapphire glass. Good precautions against scratches, however, we had not found even after several months of use on the OnePlus 3 no scratches on the Kameraglas – nevertheless, this is, of course, an advantage.

Difference 7: Colors

The original OnePlus 3 was available in “Graphite” with the black front, silver back and black antenna strips. In July, OnePlus was also playing the pretty “soft gold” version, which was white on the front, gleaming gold-silvery in the back, and white antenna strips.

The OnePlus 3T will be available again in the “soft gold” version, but currently, only the version is available in “Gunmetal Gray”. This corresponds to the Graphite version, the gray on the back is however significantly darker and the camera mount shines also darker than before. Taste, what one finds more beautiful – but noble look but all versions.

Win-Update: Test-Conclusion for the OnePlus 3T

The OnePlus 3 is a smartphone, which is fun, for its half successor is, of course, the same. However, the similarities between both models predominate, both externally and internally. The OnePlus 3T is an equally recommended device as its predecessor, but it was too expensive to our taste. If one does not urgently need a better front camera or more memory, one can as a OnePlus-3 owner continue to be satisfied with his smartphone. Anyone who has beloved with the OP3 anyway can now make on eBay or through third-party merchants one or the other bargain for the (slightly) older variant.
