LG G6 Review

The G5 was a separate point in the great series that started the LG G2 and the LG G4 knew how to carry the highest. The new LG G6 arrives to make up for lost time sacrificing everything for what the G5 bet on, but focusing on the real needs and preferences of the users. We have been able to put our hands on it and these are our first impressions.

LG G6 – Availability and price

The LG G6 was introduced during the Mobile World Congress 2017 in Barcelona. The device will be available in silver, black and white. The European version has 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal memory expandable through microSD up to 2 TB. LG already has a fixed date to start sales of the G6 in Spain. It will be April 13 and its starting price is 749 euros.

LG G6 – Design and finishing

The G5 was a big change in the style and design of what had been quite a successful lineup. With the G6, LG is reinventing itself with targeting user priorities. In this way, the LG G6 has a large screen in a fairly small body. Specifically, the manufacturer has been able to place a screen of 5.7 inches in a body of a current smartphone of 5.2 inches. Its dimensions are 148.9 x 71.9 x 7.9 mm and its weight is 163 grams. According to the manufacturer, LG has given importance to comfort and usability making it easy to use with one hand. For our part, we can say that the phone feels very comfortable in the hand and is easy to handle.

What is striking about its appearance is the novel format that is somewhat longer and narrower than what the rest of the industry has accustomed us to. Its frame is metallic with curved corners, although the back is made of glass. I have to say that the black model leaves a lot of traces, although the silver does better work. In contact with the screen and the back, the metal has a small bevel to improve the change of curvature.

On the other hand, it is the first flagship of the waterproof brand thanks to an IP68 certificate.

The LG G6 has said goodbye to friends of the G5, the famous modules, and has focused on a round device without additives. The edges are quite thin as in the LG G4, occupying the screen almost the entire front surface. Below we have the manufacturer logo and crowning we find from the center to the left: a speaker, proximity sensor, and the front camera.

The bottom of the frame is very similar to the one we see on the V20, especially the slots for the main speaker. In the center, we have a USB type C and on the other side a microphone. At the top of the frame, we find, thankfully, the mini-jack for headphones and a second microphone for noise cancellation. To the left, we have two buttons to control the volume and to the right, we have a slot for the SIM and microSD.

The power button remains on the back side located on the fingerprint sensor. On top of this, we have the camera module that has two lenses, one on each side and in the center the flash and a laser focus sensor.

LG G6 – Screen

The screen is one of the unique points of the LG G6. It has a very special format that we have never seen before. Specifically, its screen has an IPS LCD technology with a diagonal of 5.7 inches, a resolution of 2,880 x 1,440 pixels QHD + with the density of 564 ppm, somewhat longer than a normal QHD. This means that the format is 18: 9 which separates it in two provides a multi-van tank of 1: 1, that is, a square for each application.

The LG G6 is the first smartphone with Dolby Vision technology, which improves the viewing experience by improving sharpness and enriching colors. This technology is already found in many movies and videos, And both Amazon and Netflix have already begun distributing videos on Dolby Vision for smartphones.

After having the phone in hand we can say that the screen offers a very good experience with stable viewing angles and balanced and realistic colors.

LG G6 – Software

The G6 brings the Android 7.0 Nougat series with the new customization layer LG UX 6.0. With this new version of the interface, which by the way looks very minimalist, the screen with this special format and multitasking Nougat, the LG G6 is the ideal companion of multitasking.

Note that the LG G6 supports Google Assistant, which starts with the start button just like Google Pixel. It is also activated through the classic ‘Ok, Google’. Apart also includes ‘Always On’.

LG G6 – Performance

The processor finally chosen is the Snapdragon 821. We do not know if Samsung has something to do with this decision because apparently, it has grabbed the production of Snapdragon 835 until spring. LG has not always brought the latest processor to its flagship, as an example we have the LG G4, which mounted a Snapdragon 808 instead of 810 (due to its temperature problems) and performed well.

For the RAM we have 4 GB; And as for the internal memory, the device is equipped with 32 GB, which can be further extended thanks to a microSD card.

LG G6 – Audio

Like the V20 the G6 has the collaboration of ESS Technology for the sound section. The G6 also mounts a Saber 32 Quad DAC ES9018S 32-bit chip. The possibilities it offers are simply high-quality audio that also supports lossless compression formats (FLAC, DSD, AIFF, and ALAC).

Contrary to the global market trend, it is grateful that the G6 still has a mini-jack for headphones.

LG G6 – Camera

The main camera of the G6 is dual like that of the G5 and V20. In this case, the two sensors are of 13 MP obtaining a capture angle of up to 125º. One of the cameras has an f / 2.4 aperture and the other f / 1.8 aperture. The camera allows you to record videos in 4K.

For the front camera, the resolution is 5 MP with aperture f / 2.2. In addition, it also enjoys a good angle of up to 100º perfect for group selfies. As for some software details, the interface closely resembles that presented by the LG G5. On the other hand, it should be noted that filters have been included in real time in both the rear camera and the front.

LG G6 – Battery

From the LG G2, we did not see a flagship manufacturer with no removable battery. The method of extraction of the G5 was quite ingenious but the model did not measure up to the design of other competitors. LG has finally decided to succumb to the trend, eliminating the removable battery, but extending the capacity of the battery up to 3300 mAh. A step quite successful, because the autonomy is what most concerns the users. In addition, the G6 has a USB type C and fast charge.
